The history of Best Buddies International began when its founder, Anthony Kennedy Shriver, recognized that there is an unjustified lack of opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities that prevents them from socializing and integrating into activities of daily life. So, as a university student, he decided to start a friendship with a young man with an intellectual disability. This experience had a great impact on the young person. Thanks to the friendship between both, his self-esteem increased and his self-image improved.
Anthony realized the enormous potential of volunteering that university students possessed. He encouraged his colleagues to participate in a new project: create opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. This is how Best Buddies was born and, since its creation in 1987, it has impacted more than 700,000 lives per year, both in volunteer work and in people with disabilities and in all those related to the friendship link program.
